The Future of Health Care using Augmented Reality:
Augmented reality will completely disrupt the way we conduct our lives. Augmented reality is a new medium rather than just a new technology that will change people’s lives in varied and profound ways, so it cannot be dismissed as just a topic for fiction.

For this week's OER, we will be focusing on Augmented Reality in science and healthcare education and training.
What is Augmented Reality?
AR is often confused with virtual reality (VR). To distinguish one from the other, consider their root words. Virtual: something that doesn’t exist; a simulation. Augment: to make something bigger or greater by adding to it; to increase. With VR, the user straps on an opaque headset and is immersed in an entirely separate world. AR, on the other hand, blends the real with the digital: Users see the physical world around them, but the view is overlaid with virtual media. If AR users are wearing the technology (in the form of glasses or a helmet), the eye piece will be see-through, allowing for complete awareness of real surroundings as 2-D and 3-D images and messages are projected in their direct line of sight (Kroc, 2017).

Reg SuretteMy name is Reg Surette, and I am a quality assurance team manager and training & education consultant for the Royal Canadian Air Force. I have personal interests in market analysis and IT sector investments, and am also completing a Master of Educational Technology degree at UBC. I'm passionate about how Augmented and Mixed Reality will impact performance-oriented training in the corporate sector. |
Dustin HydeMy name is Dustin Hyde, and I am a graduate student at UBC's Masters of Education program and a high school teacher from Penticton Secondary School. I recently completed a Virtual Reality course and was compelled to further my knowledge and understanding in the realm of all things extended reality (AR/MR/VR). Being my 9th course in the MET journey I have learned extensively about various educational technologies and how they fit into the broad realm of education and industry. |
